Frequently Asked Questions

About French Bulldogs

What's the French Bulldog personality like?

Frenchies are basically little love bugs with big personalities. They're affectionate, playful, and totally devoted to their humans. Think of them as your shadow – they'll follow you from room to room and want to be part of everything you do. They're great with families, love to cuddle, and have this goofy, entertaining side that'll keep you laughing. They're not yappy dogs, but they'll let you know when something's exciting. Perfect apartment dogs, perfect house dogs – they just want to be wherever you are.

Are French Bulldogs good with kids and other pets?

Absolutely! Frenchies are patient and gentle, which makes them awesome family dogs. They typically get along great with kids, other dogs, and even cats. They're companion dogs through and through, so they're naturally social. Just make sure young kids know how to play gently with them since Frenchies are sturdy but not indestructible.

Do French Bulldogs bark a lot?

Nope! One of the best things about Frenchies is they're pretty quiet. They're not big barkers – they'll only sound off when there's a real reason for excitement. What they DO do is snort, grunt, and snore, which honestly just adds to their charm.

Can French Bulldogs be left alone?

These guys are total velcro dogs and thrive on companionship. They can handle being alone for a few hours, but they're happiest when they're with their people. If you work long hours or travel constantly, a Frenchie might not be the best fit. They can develop separation anxiety if left alone too much. Four hours is about the max we'd recommend.

Health & Care

What health issues should I know about?

French Bulldogs are brachycephalic (flat-faced), which means they can have breathing challenges, especially in hot or humid weather. This is why we health test our breeding dogs and only breed healthy lines. Other things to watch for include skin fold infections (keep those wrinkles clean!), allergies, and hip issues. Regular vet visits are super important – most Frenchies should see their vet twice a year. We provide health clearances for all our puppies and stand behind their health.

How much exercise do French Bulldogs need?

These aren't marathon runners! Frenchies need about 30 minutes to an hour of exercise daily, but we're talking short, relaxed walks and indoor play sessions – not intense workouts. They're low-energy compared to most breeds. A quick morning walk, some fetch in the yard, and they're good. Just avoid exercising them when it's hot out.

Can French Bulldogs swim?

Not really! Their body structure (heavy in the front, short legs) makes swimming difficult and dangerous. They can drown easily. If you want your Frenchie near water, always use a flotation device and supervise closely. Keep pool sessions short and sweet.

How do I deal with the heat?

French Bulldogs and heat don't mix well. Keep them in air conditioning when it's hot or humid (above 70°F). Walk them early morning or late evening in summer. Always have fresh water available. Watch for heavy panting or difficulty breathing – those are signs they're overheating. Never leave them in a parked car, even for "just a minute."

Grooming & Maintenance

How much grooming do French Bulldogs need?

Pretty low maintenance! Their short coat needs brushing about once a week to remove loose hair and keep it shiny. They only need baths every 4-6 weeks or when they get visibly dirty – don't overdo it, as too much bathing strips their natural oils. The most important thing is keeping their facial wrinkles clean and dry to prevent infections. Check those folds regularly! Also trim nails every few weeks and brush their teeth regularly.

Do French Bulldogs shed?

They do shed, but not excessively. You'll notice more shedding twice a year (spring and fall). Weekly brushing with a soft-bristle brush or rubber grooming mitt helps keep it under control.

Do they need haircuts?

Nope! French Bulldogs should never be shaved or trimmed. Their short coat protects their skin and regulates their body temperature. The only exception would be if your vet recommends it for a specific health reason.

Bringing Home Your Puppy

What should I ask a breeder?

Great question! You should ask about health testing (we do full health clearances on our breeding dogs), meet the parents if possible, see where the puppies are raised, and ask about the puppy's socialization. A good breeder will answer all your questions openly and honestly – and will probably ask YOU questions too, because we want to make sure our puppies go to the right homes. Red flags include breeders who won't let you visit, can't provide health clearances, or have multiple litters available all the time.

What's included when I get a puppy from Coastal Breeze?

All our puppies come with their first round of vaccinations, health clearances, a vet checkup, and a health guarantee. We'll send you home with a puppy care package and we're always available to answer questions throughout your Frenchie's life. You're not just getting a puppy – you're joining the Coastal Breeze family.

How do I prepare my home for a French Bulldog puppy?

Get a comfy bed, food and water bowls, quality puppy food (we'll recommend what we feed), some safe toys (avoid rawhide – it can be a choking hazard), and puppy-proof your space. French Bulldogs are curious and will explore everything! Set up a cozy spot where they can rest and feel safe.

What should I feed my French Bulldog?

High-quality, AAFCO-approved dog food appropriate for their age is key. Frenchies can gain weight easily, so don't overfeed them even when they give you those puppy dog eyes! We'll give you detailed feeding instructions when you take your puppy home. Fresh water should always be available.

Training & Behavior

Are French Bulldogs easy to train?

Yes and no! They're intelligent and eager to please, but they also have a stubborn streak. The key is making training fun and using positive reinforcement (food is a great motivator!). Short training sessions work best. Start early with socialization and basic obedience. Despite the stubborn stereotype, most Frenchies actually love learning when it's treated like a game.

When should I start training?

As soon as you bring your puppy home! The ideal time to start is around 8-12 weeks old. Puppy training classes are great for socialization and learning basic commands together.

Do French Bulldogs have behavior problems?

Like any dog, they can develop issues if not properly trained and socialized. A bored Frenchie might chew your shoes or get into mischief. They can be possessive of their owners' attention and might get jealous in multi-pet households. But with proper training, early socialization, and plenty of love and attention, most Frenchies are well-behaved, happy companions.

Cost & Commitment

How much does a French Bulldog cost?

Quality French Bulldogs from reputable breeders typically range from several thousand dollars. The price reflects health testing, quality breeding practices, proper veterinary care, and the breeder's commitment to the breed. If you see prices that seem too good to be true, they probably are – that's often a red flag for puppy mills or unhealthy breeding practices. Contact us for current pricing on available puppies.

What are the ongoing costs?

Beyond the initial purchase, plan for quality food, regular vet visits (at least twice yearly for Frenchies), vaccinations, flea/tick prevention, and occasional grooming supplies. French Bulldogs can have higher vet costs due to their breed-specific health concerns, so pet insurance is something many owners consider.

How long do French Bulldogs live?

With proper care, most French Bulldogs live 10-14 years. That's a decade-plus commitment of love, care, and companionship!
